If you aren't getting at least 4 wins, and on most occasions 6+ wins, you aren't going to make much profit. If I end up with a terrible deck and only win 2-3 games, I usually get a pack and around 30-40 gold, which is a net loss of 10-20 gold and way more time investment. Basically if you are confident you can get into the 4 prize pack range, which I believe is 4-5 wins, it will always be profitable. If you aren't confident in your ability to do that then you will end up losing gold most of the time.
You are also going to having to be a scumlord if you want great numbers in arena. Don't try to do quests in arena, if you have the option to pick Mage, Rogue, or Pally, do it. Trying to do your priest, hunter, or warrior daily in arena as an unskilled player is going to end with you getting 2-3 wins.
